on January 15, 2008You are definitely on the right track, and I appreciate the effort. For the people in the class who have never attempted to light something like this, it is much harder than it looks, and the direction and quality of light is perfect. I especially like the way the highlight on the top of the apple defines the shape. I also especially like the striped background, and the fact that it repeats on the surface that the objects are sitting on. Two minor points that fall under the attention to detail category. The bright rectangular highlight on the bottle could have been broader which would soften in a bit and therefore it would not compete as much with the label. (That same light source is creating the bright round highlight on the front of the apple, which because of its small size becomes somewhat of a target and therefore somewhat distracting). You did a very good job of lighting the label with that soft transition and reflection in the gold type. The other minor point is that the apple could use some life. A stem would help, a stem with a leaf would really help and would add a third element to the composition. (Odd numbers of elements are much easier to work with than even numbers).
Good job on the car also. The direction of the light describes the shape very well. Perfect highlights on the wheel wells and rims! I also really like the way the light falls off in brightness from the front of the car to the rear. It creates a great sense of motion! What would have helped is a backlight to put an edge of light on the spoiler in order to separate the back of the car from the background. Think of the highlight on the edge of the red leaf, (If you haven't seen it yet its coming).
Very good execution of the assignment, it's the slight details that take these kind of images to the next level.
